Milestones

 

Sustainable acting is a question of responsibility for AIDA Cruises - we stay on course and continue to develop.

Our most important milestones since the company’s foundation. We regularly add new milestones to the list:

2018

• Launch of AIDAnova: AIDAnova first supplied with LNG in Santa Cruz, Tenerife, and successfully run on LNG in port and at sea
• AIDA successfully launched partnerships focusing on environmentally friendly cruise tourism with the regional governments of Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, one of the aims is to build a shore power facility in the ports of Kiel and Rostock by 2020
• AIDAbella is retrofitted with an Advanced Air Quality System (AAQS)
• AIDA Selection - AIDAcara completes first round-the-world cruise in February 2018 / AIDAaura departs on the second AIDA round-the-world cruise in October 2018
• Portfolio expanded: 1,100 sustainable excursions bearing the Tree symbol
• Second large-scale AIDA employee survey
• Numerous awards: Green Controlling Prize 2018, Innovation Prize of the German Gas Industry, 2 Cruise Guide Awards, German Fairness Prize, Fairplay Award, Live Entertainment Award, Service Champion, TOP Training Company, Germany’s Best Training Company, Top Employer 2018, most sustainable cruise line in the GERMANY TEST

2017

  • More than one million AIDA guests for the first time
  • Initiation of LNG operations at Canary Islands 
  • AIDAsol regularly supplied with shore power in Hamburg Altona
  • Launch of AIDAperla: Setup of MALS technology, azipod and tunnel washers
  • Construction of AIDAnova commenced: steel sections, keel laying and installation of the dual fuel engines
  • AIDAblu retrofitted with exhaust gas cleaning system
  • AIDAcara receives modern fresh water production system
  • AIDA Selection - AIDAcara completes first round-the-world voyage
  • I LOVE TO SEE YOU SMILE Award for travel agencies: AIDA SMILING STAR
  • Portfolio expanded: 700 sustainable excursions bearing a Tree symbol
  • A first in the cruise industry: “I Feedback” system for recording guest satisfaction

2016

  • Start of AIDAprima LNG operations in Hamburg, Southampton, Le Havre, Zeebrugge and Rotterdam
  • MALS technology, pod drives and tunnel washers on AIDAprima
  • Support provided to shore power plant pilot project with AIDAsol in Hamburg Altona
  • AIDA Home awarded DGNB gold seal (recertification)
  • Collaboration with the University of Rostock to introduce telemedicine as an important aspect of basic medical care on AIDA ships
  • Expansion of voluntary CO2 offset program for inbound and outbound flights of AIDA cruise guests
  • AIDA Selection - new form of travel with AIDAcara, AIDAaura and AIDAvita, e.g. to remote destinations, and first AIDA round-the-world cruise
  • Founding of Arison Maritime Center, Home of CSMART, maritime training and simulation center in Almere/Netherlands
  • I LOVE TO SEE YOU SMILE - further development of our AIDA values as a new service and quality offensive under the patronage of Felix Eichhorn

2015

  • Beginning of operations of the LNG Hybrid Barge with AIDAsol in Hamburg’s Hafencity
  • Introduction of voluntary guest CO2 offsets for AIDA cruises / CO2 offsets for AIDA business trips
  • Installation of first stage of a comprehensive filter system to reduce sulphur oxides on AIDAdiva and AIDAmar
  • Joined Stiftung 2°
  • Certification of AIDA Home with DNGB silver seal
  • Tenth anniversary of partnership with SOS Kinderdorf e.V.
  • Seatrade Award 2016 for Environmental Initiative of the Year (LNG Hybrid Barge / LNG ships)
  • Foundation of Carnival Maritime as central Marine Operation Center in Hamburg. State-of-the-art and efficient operation of the entire fleet of the Costa Group
  • Commissioning of two new ships at the MEYER WERFT in Papenburg in line with “Green Cruising” approach, which can be run on eco-friendly LNG (to join the fleet in 2018/2021), both in port and at sea.

2014

  • Installation of first stage of a comprehensive filter system to reduce sulphur oxides on AIDAluna and AIDAvita
  • Development of a standardized and scientific catalog of criteria for sustainable land excursions with Futouris e.V., the State Chancellery of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the Leuphana University of Lüneburg
  • Introduction of sustainable land excursions at all AIDA destinations
  • Launch of the LNG Hybrid Barge in October 2014 • Introduction of electric cars in the company car fleet
  • Introduction of EMMA energy monitoring and management system by ABB
  • B.A.U.M Environment Award 2014

2013

  • Latest ballast water treatment system on AIDAstella
  • Founding of AIDA Freunde der Meere e.V. (AIDA Friends of the Sea)
  • Approval of an environment investment program amount to more than €100 million by 2016
  • AIDA announces it will be the first cruise line to install a comprehensive exhaust gas treatment system on its new ships due to arrive in 2015/2016 and to retrofit the existing fleet in stages
  • Introduction of an environment Q&A session on all ships
  • Introduction of car sharing and company bicycles
  • TÜV Süd Green Fleet Award
  • Baltic Sea Clean Maritime Award
  • AIDAsol becomes first AIDA ship to be equipped for running on shore power

2012

  • Opening of the AIDA Academy in Rostock
  • AIDA Cruises opens CSMART in Rostock - the first center in Germany for maritime simulation training in the cruise industry
  • ADAC Safety in Cruises test. The AIDA ships tested are the only ones to receive the distinction “Very Good”
  • Beginning of the LNG Hybrid Barge pilot project with Becker Marine Systems with a view to using LNG as a low-emission ship fuel in ports
  • Creation of the Sustainability Department under the leadership of Dr Monika Griefahn, the Director for Environment and Society
  • AIDA Cruises announces that the next generation of AIDA ships 2015/2016 will be the first cruise ships in the world to receive duel fuel engines to allow for running on LNG and innovative MALS technology - AIDA becomes a member of B.A.U.M. e.V.

2011

  • Introduction of regular environmental training courses for the entire crew
  • Involvement in e4ships project run by the Federal Government 
  • Heat Recovery System on AIDAmar
  • All ships in the fleet are given a silicone coating
  • Introduction of online guest questionnaires
  • Guest satisfaction at “Very Good"
  • AIDA becomes a member of Futouris e.V.

2010

  • Use of an effective new route management system: AIDA Power Monitor used as an analytical tool
  • Introduction of detailed environmental reporting system
  • Adoption of anti-corruption guidelines • Process implementation for highest data protection requirements
  • Eco-friendly light management system and hotel card switches as standard on all new AIDA ships from 2010
  • HVAC Control System for using waste heat and exhaust air as standard on all new AIDA ships from 2010

2008 / 2009

  • Development of “Ten golden rules for excursions on land” - ecological thinking on land and at sea
  • GL Environmental Passport
  • Green Planet Award from Kuon
  • Foundation of the European Cruise Academy

2006 / 2007

  • Development and implementation of an integrated management system (IMS)
  • AIDA is certified for the first time in accordance with ISO 14001, quality management 9001, work safety management OHSAS 18001, ship safety ISM Code/ ISPS Code, social responsibility (GLC Maritime Social Responsibility)
  • GL 5 Stars Excellence Award 
  • First silicon coating for the fleet to reduce friction losses
  • Definition of sustainability as a strategic objective
  • Creation of Environment Officer position on board 
  • Opening of a training center in Manila/The Philippines for employee development
  • Introduction of the Code of Business Conduct and Ethics • Family-friendly company (establishment of AIDA Kindergarten and AIDA Nursery, member of the "Erfolgsfaktor Familie” network)
  • AIDAdiva (launched 2007) and all subsequent AIDA ships are prepared for shore power connections
  • Since 2007, AIDA Cruises has voluntarily only used marine diesel with a sulphur content of 0.1 percent in Hamburg
  • All ships after AIDAdiva (2007) receive a reverse osmosis system for preparing fresh water on board
